The Green Pearl is an living community at the intersection of art, culture, nature and design.

It shines quietely on the green necklace around the city and invites the people of Dunkergue to walk, play, enjoy its scenic park and discover the emerging cultural scene. It brings in a new way of life and ushers in a new page in the urban history of the city.

At present the western edge of the Pier is attached to the mainland. Adjacency to the busy road and the rail infrastructure makes this the least desirable place to live on the pier.

The proposal mediates this condition by turning the pier into an island and builds upon the existing strategy of the city to enhance its urban identity by restoring its historic inner waterfont. It will further enhance the sucessful efforts to revitalize the downtown, improve public space and bring new creative energy to Dunkerque.

City wide proposal connects the currently fragmented greenery arround the city into a continuous green loop and links it with the new development on the island. This embracing urban gesture works to strengthen the identity of the center by clearly defining its boundary and offering walking and biking opportunities arround the perimeter.

The island becomes a culminating experience of the green loop. With its beautiful public park it becomes the new green heart of the city. Pedestrian bridges connect main public spaces of the downtown with the concourse and the park on the island. Envisioned to celebrate the history of the city and its harbour, the new design of the island showcases the tranformation of the post-industrial landscape and symboles the new chapter in the urban history of the city.
