Nestled on an old, linear string of neighborhood buildings, this project breathes new life into a former small grocery store with an adjoining house. Purchased by a young family drawn by the generous plot size rather than the existing structure itself, the property promised endless potential. The refurbishment began with a decisive step: demolishing and uncluttering decades of accumulated annexes, setting the stage for a fresh, modern vision.
The design concept was clear from the start—create a spacious, family-oriented home with a seamless connection to the surrounding garden. By centering the staircase in the heart of the building, the new floor plan pivots around a dynamic core. This central element not only organizes the interior but also unifies the living spaces, offering both openness and intimacy. The result is a home that provides myriad “corners” perfect for a family with three young children, ensuring that everyone can find their own secluded retreat within a vibrant communal space.
A defining aspect of the project is the new extension that fans out into the garden. Its angular form is intentionally designed to maximize visual and physical contact with the outdoors, creating an almost uninterrupted view of nature. Large windows and a striking frameless corner window serve as a bold statement—an invitation to bring the outside in. At the same time, the architects made a clear distinction between the original brickwork and windows of the historic structure and the sleek, contemporary elements introduced during the renovation. This juxtaposition not only preserves the character of the past but also celebrates modern design.

On the first floor, a compact space is transformed into a sanctuary of light and air. The removal of the former attic and the extension of the ceiling height up to the pitched roof lend an expansive feel to the interior. This level houses four thoughtfully designed bedrooms, tailored to the practical needs of modern family life. The master suite, positioned on the garden side, features an eastern-inspired en-suite complete with a small shower and sink—a nod to minimalist luxury. An innovative detail is the walk-in closet equipped with a laundry shaft, which effortlessly connects to the ground floor laundry room, ensuring the home remains as functional as it is stylish.
The rear extension extends the home’s living area into the outdoors with a covered space designed for comfort. Whether it’s escaping the midday sun or enjoying the long, balmy summer evenings, this area provides a perfect setting for relaxation and family gatherings. It’s a versatile space where the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living gracefully blur.
This refurbishment is more than just a renovation—it’s a thoughtful reimagining of a cherished space. By stripping away the outdated layers and reintroducing a modern aesthetic that honors the original building, the project creates a harmonious dialogue between heritage and contemporary living. The result is a family home that not only meets every practical need but also offers an inviting, nature-connected retreat for years to come.
